Research Interest
Female genital tract with particular emphasis on the causes of pathology of the cervix and lower tract as well as assessing the effects of treatment, such as irradiation.
A major interest has been the study of oncogenic viral infections in the lower female genital tract, especially human papillomavirus (HPV) but also including EBV.
Currently the major interest is directed towards finding a means of economically and easily identifying HPV types present in those cases diagnosed by cytology as the Bethesda System entity of Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASCUS) or Low Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (LSIL). If this sizeable number of patients can be divided into one group which is infected with high risk types of HPV and another with low risk type or no HPV, then treatment and follow-up regimes at colposcopy clinics etc., can be better tailored for a given patient and resources used more effectively.
